The Importance Of Trees In Protecting Against Respiratory Illness: 🌿🌳🌿

One thing that is emerging clear from Covid-19 is the importance of trees in purifying our air and reducing respiratory illness.  We need our trees more than ever to keep us strong and healthy and able to withstand viruses like this.
Ireland has the second lowest number of trees in Europe and correspondingly the 4th highest levels of respiratory illness in the world with over 475,000 current asthmatics.  We also have third highest rates of cardiac illness and cancer (links provided below).  It’s more than a hypothesis that trees, especially urban trees, benefit health.  The following is just one of several studies proving this.

People with respiratory illness and other health conditions have been noted as the main high risk factor for Covid-19, in particular those over 70.  Of the two factors, other health conditions, in particular respiratory conditions, have been stated as being the higher of the two risks.

It’s no coincidence that Northern Italy, which is known to have the highest levels of air pollution in Europe, is the area most affected by Covid-19.  To compound the problem, the area was the worst affected by the November 2018 storms resulting in the loss of 14 million trees.

While more data would be needed to draw definitive conclusions, it’s clear from other studies that trees play a hugely important role in human respiratory health.
For this reason, it is vital that our government and local councils take note and take immediate measures to cease the unnecessary rampant felling and severe pruning practices that put people at greater risk of respiratory and other illnesses including Covid-19.
Now would be a good time to write to your local representatives, TD’s, senators and local councils informing them of this.
We’ve seen numerous articles promoting the importance of trees in fighting climate change.   We have a new slogan ready to use:
“The Importance Of Trees In Protecting Against Coronavirus.”
So spread the word, inform your local representatives and councils.
And most importantly, stay healthy and safe.  🌿🌳💚
